Attracting Coal Tits

Coal tits are the babies of the tit world - smaller than a Blue Tit but just as canny.  With his black head with a broad white stripe down the back, black bib, and buff and grey body he is a handsome little fellow!  He likes to take the sunflower seeds from your feeders and hide them – this ‘caching’ of food is something several birds do but none so nippily as the coal tit.  His strategy is to duck and dive between the other tits, take what he wants and get out.  You'll hardly know he's there.  Coal Tits are great to have around the garden as they are avid insect feeders so provide lots of free pest control!  As the smallest of the garden tits they sometimes miss out on nest boxes so make sure you have plenty around.  They might just take possession while the Blue and Great Tits aren't looking.

What do Coal Tits eat?

Like all tits they love Peanuts, Sunflower Hearts, Black Sunflower Seeds and  Suet.  They prefer to feed from a hanging Seed or Peanut Feeder but will also nip down to a table if it has the seeds they like.
