Attracting Great Tits
Great Tits are great birds! Bold, colourful and acrobatic, they are the fourth most common bird in our gardens during the winter months. With their glossy black head and bib and olive green and yellow bodies, Great Tits demand to be looked at! They tend to dominate our hanging feeders and can be aggressive towards the smaller tits, but by and large they all muddle along together in spite of their similar feeding habits. Like the Blue Tit they take readily to a garden nest box, so if you want more in your garden, choose a box with the right size hole for them and Bob's your uncle - more Great Tits! The youngsters are paler versions of their parents and learn to come to your feeders faster than a Robin eats a mealworm!
What do Great Tits eat?
Like Blue and Coal Tits, Great Tits are fond of small insects and eat huge numbers of caterpillars and aphids, helping us to maintain a healthy garden without the use of chemicals. Given the chance though, they will munch their way through a great variety of nuts and seeds, top favourites being Black Sunflower and Sunflower Hearts, plus Peanuts of course and any mixes containing these.
