Attracting House Sparrows

Just a handful of years ago who would have thought that we would have been so concerned about the plight of the common House Sparrow?  There has been a massive decline of around 60 per cent in the numbers of these chirpy characterful little birds over the last 25 years and at the moment the jury is still out on exactly why this has happened.  It's likely to be as a result of a number of different factors.  Welcoming them into your garden goes a little way towards keeping them happy, especially as one of the problems they have seems to be lack of food at the right time of year.  Nest boxes too can help.  Don't confuse the House Sparrow - a heavy billed chunky little fellow, fond of sitting around and doing nothing in particular, with the Dunnock (once called the Hedge Sparrow) who is altogether slimmer, slighter in build with a small pointed beak.

What do House Sparrows Eat?

Sparrows are seed eaters for most of the year so any good quality seed mixture will keep them chirpy.  They will use a seed feeder if they must, but prefer to feed from a Ground Tray.
