Attracting Jackdaws

If you like your birds big, handsome, arrogant and cool, the Jackdaw is for you.  He's so cool he should wear sunglasses.  He’ll even nest in your chimney if you give him half a chance (and if you’d rather he didn't, cover it with a cowl!) and Jackdaws are reported in about a quarter of our gardens.  They are traditionally farmland birds but they also love large gardens where they can find food – lots of creepy crawlies, fruit and kitchen scraps, and they are also rather partial to large seeds.  The bond between male and female Jackdaws is strong and he is also a great dad, keeping an eye on the youngsters while mum gets a break.  It's easy to confuse the Jackdaw with his Crow cousins but look closely and you will see that he is a lot smaller than a Crow, has a grey rather than black head and stunning blue eyes – quite the Brad Pitt of the bird world!

What do Jackdaws eat?

Hanging feeders are not often used by a bird of this size - although Jackdaws are rapidly learning - so most seed mixes, especially those with suet pellets and peanuts will get Jackdaws interested when fed on the ground or on a bird table.  They will also perch on top of a Suet Cake feeder if they get the chance!
