Attracting Starlings

Do you love them or hate them??  Here at JAB we love Starlings for their energy, their chatter and their sparkling iridescent spottiness!  Plus their numbers have declined by 50 per cent in the last 25 years and we want to help put them back at the top of the tree!  They are without doubt the characters of your garden bird table but rather like a gang of bad boys on a street corner, they can intimidate smaller birds.  If this is a problem you can use a cover for a low bird table that allows the smaller birds to pop through to get to the food, or use a hanging feeder that excludes Starlings.  Mind you we can't guarantee that they won't kick your dustbin over if you do!  And did you know that the Gaelic name for this bird is Druid. Magic!

What do Starlings eat?

Starlings are greatly in need of all the help we can give them. They enjoy all sorts of foods including berries and kitchen scraps but treat them to suet in any form and they'll love you for it.
