Great Spotted Woodpeckers

What can be said about this bird – except WOW! The holy grail for many garden bird watchers, this species has it all – charisma, glamour and entertainment value!  His red, black and white plumage makes him stand out from the crowd and for that we can forgive the fact that he can be a little bit of a bully.  ‘This is MY Peanut Feeder, so clear off!’  Not a problem if you have more than one feeder – the little’uns will just keep out of his way.  Great Spotted Woodpeckers are reported from about a quarter of gardens and it’s always a thrill to see them around.  They are unmistakeable, as no other bird visiting your garden has that coloration, large dagger beak and the characteristic woodpecker undulating flight and sharp ‘chick’ alarm call.  He’s one cool customer!

What do Great Spotted Woodpeckers eat?

Peanuts and more Peanuts for this handsome bird, with a sprinkling of suet. Give him a large hanging Peanut Feeder and he will come and go when he feels like it. If you are lucky and there is a nest in your area he may also bring his family.
