Ring-Necked Parakeets

Elegant and colourful?  Noisy and messy?  Love him or hate him, this Himalayan parakeet has been around in the wild in the UK for many years, and is here to stay.  He likes it here!  Do they harm our native species?  Well the jury is still out but they certainly eat a lot and may take up nest sites that other birds would like.  Bright emerald green with a black and red mark on the neck that looks like someone has tried to cut his head off (we're not commenting....) he is most likely to be seen in gardens in the South East although there are small populations all over the UK now.  We like his Italian name - Parrocchetto dal Collare - which makes him sound rather cool!

What do Ring-Necked Parakeets eat?

In the wild these birds have survived because we have thoughtfully planted shrubs with berries around our towns and cities in the South East, and parakeets love berries!  They also like fruit, seeds and nuts so any general seed mix with Sunflower Hearts, Peanuts Granules and large seeds of any sort is likely to attract them.
