Attracting Chaffinches
Take a long hard look at a Chaffinch in spring and be amazed! We take these common finches for granted but they are one of our most beautiful British birds. In his full breeding finery the male is bright pink on his chest and back (not hot pink like a Bullfinch but this isn't a competition), he's powder blue on his head and neck and still has a bit of space for yellow streaks on his wings!
Two thirds of our gardens have them and they happily build their pretty mossy nests in garden hedges, so keep yours thick, don't disturb it through from early spring to autumn and you too could help increase numbers of these beautiful birds. In the winter months be prepared for your Chaffinch numbers to increase as birds from the Continent visit us. There – we always knew our gardens were best!
What do Chaffinches eat?
All our finches are avid seed feeders and a Chaffinch will eat what appears to be his own weight in seed given the chance. Unperturbed by people they are happy to sit on a table or in a window feeder, thoughtfully picking out their particular favorite seeds.
