Attracting Goldfinches

Who wouldn't want these gorgeous golden birds in their garden? Once very much a countryside species, the canny Goldfinch has noticed that he can wrap us round his little feet and get us to feed him with Nyjer seed, the Goldfinch equivalent of choc chip cookies – but healthy. Now there's a thought. Goldfinches are just about our most colourful garden birds and with their yellow, black and white wings and bright red faces it's not surprising. This species is a real success story, with numbers rising in our gardens year on year. There has been an almost 80 per cent increase in the past decade and and it's largely thanks to feeding them in our gardens. Medals all round!

What do Goldfinches eat?

Obviously Nyjer, which is the seed of a tiny Sunflower-like plant, is a Goldfinch magnet but they do need to get used to it and don’t forget to feed from a special Nyjer feeder. Once they have though, your garden could be swarming with them. They also like Sunflower Hearts, other small seeds and Peanut Granules.
