Attracting Nuthatches
If ever there was a bird with the X Factor it has to be the Nuthatch. He’s not only stunning to look at but a bird with attitude. He’s an absolute favourite in the JAB gardens with his blue-grey back and pinkie-orange breast, prominent black eye stripe and big sharp beak! This is used for cracking open Hazel Nuts, Acorns and Beech Mast and for scaring smaller birds from your peanut feeder! Don’t hold this against him though - he is fiercely territorial and to have one visiting your garden is a pleasure. Nuthatches prefer gardens with large trees, or with woodland nearby where they nest in holes in tree trunks, adapting the hole size with plentiful daubs of mud. The X Factor bird. Watch out Simon Cowell!
What do Nuthatches Eat?
An old name for this bird was Nut Hacker - its all in the name really isn’t it? So Peanuts first and foremost but they will also take Sunflower Hearts from a seed mixture and they like a tasty Suet Cake. Feed the Peanuts in a mesh feeder but the other morsels will be taken from a Ground Tray or even a window feeder if you are lucky.
